and so;
i did away with the blog years of 2006 and 2007, and stopped myself before i started on the horrors of 2004-2005.
like i said to shich: this is because there is no virtual cardboard box to stuff them hidden away in the attic with.
i say good riddance:
my blog never did reflect who i was, not even for that particular moment in time.

blogspot exists where facebook does not.
and that is in rare occurences and sad, but so true.
graphic design exercises are to me altogether boring and a real drag. i wish someone would just spoil market or give a sign that says all these 'class exercises' are meant to be taken seriously as real pieces of work.
got really excited over vintage anatomical drawings while looking for images to rip off, as we were told to do, and found an artist's statement that made me stop and want to keep the site, wishing it was tangible and concrete.
Since the age of eighteen every job that I have had has centered around death and the disassembly of the human body. Over twenty years of such work has pushed me into a permanent melancholy. My art, however, has flourished under these circumstances, even as the rest of my life (and body) gradually dissolves.
Out of desperation I turned to art. I made three-dimensional collage works that were labeled as perverted or grotesque. After a number of group and solo shows this mode of working ceased to satisfy me, and I began a study of fine art. Several years of figurative study have brought me to a point where I am satisfied that I can translate my ideas to clay or canvas.
Recently I read an article about sperm whales and learned that the whales are gouged and disfigured about their heads by the food they eat (giant squid) and from goring each other with their teeth in sex spats. For weeks I have walked around looking at everyone as an assemblage of wounds, as if the battles of their lives were scars wrapped around their faces. Every maneuver of avoidance, every slight glance, wringing of wrists, all evidence of failed loves, of lovers consumed.
Art is the high point of a society. Without it, we are nothing. Nothing, that is, but a collection of scars and defects waiting to be re-cycled. Its our art allows us to transcend this darkness. It lives beyond us on our temple walls, books, tapestries and in the dreams of our descendants. When its creator is forgotten, art proves its true magic. It lives on even as we do not.
Scott Graeber.
Beautiful, is it not. I want to be able to write about myself and my work like that.
Meanwhile, this weekend im DEFINITELY going to hairloom and caramel. look at their cupcakes!

i've seen the sunken plaza completely dry! "Fountain maintenance" it seems. Looks absolutely pre-apocalyptic to me. Like the ground might split open the next second and start spewing out molten lava. Totally rad.

did some much-needed luxury-window shopping online
and here are the picks:
really interesting colour= cute shoes! the dipping in orange paint really is just genius.from here

made from a laser cut sheet of pure gold wrapped around a pearl. understated, easily produced and the simple design will probably last for a lifetime. this is what i call effortless design. great for keeping on fingers for future family heirlooms eh.from here

army green lace up rain boots. better than wellies.from here
i so want this:

yeah but at USD$449, its veryvery close to impossible. bleagh.from here
what are the chances i find something like this in singapore for me to buy?
from here
and lastttt but probably most precious,
Gareth Pugh AW'09. very twisted and sinister but very cool, inspiring imagery. interesting use of silk chiffon, i would say. like some writhing inkblot. how wonderful.
that's all for now.
mostly a shoe post eh, maybe its an indication of a new phase.

why is it,
that some things gather reactions and some dont? why is it that only some ideas see the light of day? why are only certain thoughts talked about? why is it, that some people get more attention than others?
i dont understand.
it seems that popularity has little correlation to quality in all aspects of life.

some people just annoy me so much with their superficial socializing skills,
i just want to grrrrr and tear them into many pieces.
and there are so many in hall! so many i can understand why pple kill themselves over this. so many i can understand how most of these pple feel incredibly lonely even when they are in a crowded room.
they smile and come to you and ask how your day was and pretend to genuinely give a toot about you when actually all they want is just strike you off their list of agendas of the day.

i want to catch this! looks like a pretteh promising stop animation.
check out the movie site here. plenty amazing and interesting at the same time, take the time to click around and explore, there are some pretty cool rewards tucked in the corners.
the trailers tucked away at the theatre in the site are worth watching.

tesseract

did this up with jane and tioranu over the weekend... took us three whole days and close to 300bucks worth of transparent stickers to complete!
looks great and we are all really proud of it =D
now to explain the concept behind it, the tesseract, which was what really sparked us off on this project.
[/edit]
Meg sighed. "Just explain it to me."
"Okay," Charles said. "What is the first dimension?"
"Well- a line."
"Okay. And the second dimension?"
"Well, you'd square the line. A flat square would be in the second dimension."
"And the third?"
"Well, you'd square the second dimension. Then the square wouldn't be flat any more. It would have a bottom, and sides, and a top."
"And the fourth?"
"Well, I guess if you want to put it into mathematical terms you'd square the square. But you can't take a pencil and draw it the way you can the first three. I know it's got something to do with Einstein and time. I guess maybe you could call the fourth dimension Time."
"That's right," Charles said. "Good girl. Okay, then, for the fifth dimension you'd square the fourth, wouldn't you?"
"I guess so."
"Well, the fifth dimension's a tesseract."
---A Wrinkle in Time (1962)
Madeleine L'Engle
Inspired by the mathematical concept of the tesseract as a means of transcending space and time, our group aims to represent the analytical nature of scientific research graphically, as tangible colour in space.
At a defined point the work seems fixed, static and perfectly logical, but move around and it slowly shifts out of reason.
Walking through the piece, the viewer is immediately immersed into a kaleidoscopic field of colours that serves to unnerve, warping preconceptions of spatial and geometrical understanding.
Hence produces a piece that exists not only in a given point in time and space, but is both affecting and affected by the viewer, transforming according to what he perceives of it.

im a super procrastinator.

i need this!

"This book was created for anyone who has ever had trouble starting/keeping or finishing a journal/sketchbook. By forcing ourselves to wreck it on purpose, the “journal as an object” loses it’s preciousness, and allows us the feeling of completion. This book was created for every person who has looked at other artist’s journals and said, “I wish I could do that. I’ve started dozens of them but didn’t stick with it.” or, “But the journal itself is so beautiful, I don’t want to wreck it with my ideas/handwriting/drawings.” Or, “I feel pressured to write something good.”
In this book good does not exist. The goal is to fill it up, to shift your perception of the blank page and the journal itself into a place for experimentation. Into a place where you just get stuff out onto the page. A place to start working against your better judgment. To do those things you were taught to never do (make a mess, destroy, fold down pages, write in books, play with dirt). This book IS the place.
Each page of Wreck This Journal is filled with prompts telling you how to systematically ‘destroy’ the entire book."

australia and ponyo
i am broke. two shows in two days!

ponyo was sadly veryvery disappointing, with little originality in character design and very shabby and raw background landscapes hardly indicative of the past more awe-inspiring studio ghibli productions. While its signature ubsurdities grow more wild in this one (what with monster-fish-like waves, big-ass mermaid/sea-goddess and human-faced goldfish living in the sea and all), its abrupt end and feeble attempts at logical plot can hardly be dismissed as just the whimsical goings-on of the young imaginative mind, as some reviews suggest.
there is an absence of real conflict in the show.
at some time, because of the inadequacy of treatment of depth in the plot, love seems almost too heavy and complex for the five-year-old sousuke and ponyo to be even talking about.
it was cute, yes, in an innocent wide-eyed way, but that was pretty much all to the show.
oh, and it has the most catchy ending song.

australia, on the other hand, while pretty predictable as the story unfolds, succeeds as a heartwarming tale of adventure and love, at the very least. at 3 hours, it was a bit of a stretch, but new and pressing conflicts in the later half of the show keep it from running dry. shameless (but good) advertising for the aussie tourism industry aside, hugh jackman was hot(every bit the rugged, weather-beaten ranger), nicole kidman still the fiery classic beauty, and the little boy was just charming. great cinematography and infusions of aboringinal culture made it every bit as magical,if not more believable, than the fantasy world of ponyo.
great idea then, to create a spin-off advert for the tourism industry.
definitely australia over talking fish.

victoria's secret fashion show 2009
predicted that i wouldnt be able to watch it on thursday on channel 5, so i caught it first on youtube. not as great as the previous one i think. some of the accessories and accents were way off and didnt add to the looks at all.

also the varsity-inspired collection seemed a little contrived, pretty unimaginative for the bold abstract colourfield pieces that came before (or was it after?) it.

the masquerade-like looks for the finale saw better continuity in the outfit, but was little saving grace for the garish wing-like ribbon-ish contraption heidi klum carried for the finishing piece. my favourite outfit in the show was arguably the one that had the VS signature wings trailing off into dark flowy fabric, and a simple black two piece with sparkly accents.
what i liked:

this came from the first collection of gladiator-inspired styles, the best of which many were grossly overdone.
there were some others that were cool too.
justin timberlake is by far way cooler than usher, if anything.
